Café Art: My London
105 different artists
Westbourne Grove Church ArtSpace is delighted to hold a touring exhibition of photographs from the Cafe Art: My London Calendar 2016.
The photos in the calendar were from a five-day photography contest in early July 2015. One hundred and five people affected by homelessness were given single-use (also known as 'disposable') cameras. With training and support from members of The Royal Photographic Society, the contest produced more than 3,000 images of London as seen from the perspectives of people affected by homelessness.
An experienced panel of judges representing The RPS, Homeless Link, Christie's, Amateur Photography magazine, the London Photo Festival and a photographer who had experienced homelessness chose an exhibition of 20 photographs. From this selection, the public were asked to choose their favourite photos in early August.
All the winning photographers were involved in the calendar production, providing stories and photographs as one of the aims of the project is to connect people through the narratives as well as the images. Homelessness can affect many people and everyone has a different story. The goal of this calendar is to increase understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness in a positive way.
Café Art connects people affected by homelessness with the wider community through art. They frame the artwork of people attending art sessions run by London homeless sector organisations and find independent London cafes to hang and sell it in, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the artists.
