Through drawing and painting David Harker’s work assesses our experience of landscape and attempts to examine landscape painting as a genre. 

In this exhibition, wall drawings and drawings on paper and panel depict images of landscape. These drawings place an emphasis on shape and texture, while retaining a sense of space and depth. The shapes are delineated by their own boundaries which frees them from the compositional frame. By moving away from more pictorial and traditional depictions of landscape this work takes on an abstract and otherworldly quality. 

Each drawing functions both as a self contained image with it’s own sense of mass and depth, whilst simultaneously appearing as a floating textural fragment revealing a concurrent sense of disjointedness and coherence.

Biography 

David Harker is an artist based in London. In 2007 he was awarded an Oppenheim – John Downes Memorial Grant and prior to that a Pollock Krasner Grant. He was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2004 and from 2001 – 2002 was a resident artist at the Florence Trust Studios in London. As well as exhibiting across the U.K., he has been in group shows in New York and Victoria, Australia. In 2001 he received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire.
