Benchspace
Touching the city
Touching the City is a design research unit that investigates the ways in which we interact with the city, observing the public realm and our relationship with the unremarkable spaces we use and inhabit every day.
This exhibition documents progress on our first project - the identification, interrogation and stimulation of benchspace, including photographs, film and other installations.
We have been mapping a much smaller type of public space that is widely dispersed across every city. Whilst safe and accessible to the public, the excessively uniform and repetitive provision of paving, a waste bin, lighting, a tree and a bench has rendered benchspace so ubiquitous that it has become invisible.
